Delhi High Court concerned about government schools infrastructure

The Delhi High Court raised questions regarding the poor infrastructure in government schools of the capital’s Northeast district. It expressed dismay over the inadequate facilities such as furniture, books, broken desks, and a shortage of classrooms.

Court's directions

The court recorded that the Education Secretary committed to improving the situation. Steps will be taken to provide books, furniture, and writing materials to all students promptly.The court directed the Secretary to file a detailed affidavit within a week. It also emphasized fixing responsibility on government officials who failed in their duties.

Based on a report by lawyer Ashok Agrawal representing an NGO, the court remarked on the deplorable condition of the schools. The Education Secretary and Agrawal were earlier instructed to visit these schools.

Court's critique

The court expressed that the Education Secretary should have personally assessed the schools' conditions on the ground level. It questioned the lack of action against junior officers for not providing information.Responding to a school being run from a tin-shed building, the court questioned the suitability for students in hot weather. The Secretary clarified it was a temporary arrangement and assured a shift to a proper building soon.The case is scheduled for the next hearing on April 23, with the court expecting improvements in school infrastructure and accountability from government officials.
